A Story About Wine in Cans
But first, a brief update, and another reminder about chipping in to support my MW journey.
Right, this week is partly another brazen attempt to drum up some support for the MW Cash. Let’s face it, that's the reason we’re all here.
Secondly, as a subtle tweak to the level of free-ness of the newsletter, so as to gently nudge those of you in the right direct cash-wise.
Finally, a quick follow on story about Morrisons and milk that makes me wonder if we think sustainably, but drink safely.
Fancy Supporting My MW Journey?
As of tomorrow, I’ll be a fully fledged Stage 2 MW Student. I’m not deferring. I’m back into study mode, and the exam is in June.
That does mean I’ve got to pay up by the end of November.
For Stage 1, you lovely bastards managed to fund just over £5k for the first year fees. I’ve got to pay the same again in a couple of weeks…
As it stands, this subscription (option) newsletter, is worth about £1.2k per year towards my MW studies. Essentially the Stage 2 GoFundMe, but through Substack, and you get a whole world of extra content from it.
If you’ve ever thought about chipping in, well, now is the time to do it. You can pay £5 per month, just £20 for the next year, or name your amount!
I can’t really convey in words how much I appreciate your support!
Newsletter Update
Later this week, all of the archives will be closed off to free subscribers. If you want to read the archive, then you’ll have to chip in. Them’s the brakes.
In future everyone will still receive the newsletter by email, but it’s increasingly likely that there will be an occasional extended version with some juicy ‘subscriber only’ content. Mostly photos of my dog, Poppy.
Each newsletter will be free to read on the website, and if you’ve signed up for free you’ll carry on getting it by email. The slight change is that they’ll be paywalled in the archive, except for a preview, when the next post comes along, and so on.
I do keep reminding myself that this newsletter was originally for the very small number people following along and supporting my MW journey, but it’s grown well beyond that in the last six months.
So, I’m not making it completely closed, because I want people who are interested to read it.
I promise you all this: Once I pass the MW, the newsletter will be free for ever for anyone who’s paid up before I pass.
Indie Insider
I wrote a couple of ‘test’ pieces called ‘Indie Insider’, which focuses on profiling Independent Wine Merchants in the UK, starting with Reserve Wines in Manchester and with my hometown friends, HarperWells.
I really like writing them. I get to talk about wine from a different angle, using various indie specialists to highlight things that I think they’re doing well, and business models and principles that I think are interesting to talk about.
The plan is to write more of those that will also be sent out exclusively to paid subscribers. If you're an indie merchant doing something cool, then get in touch.
