I dont think that a business model that seems like its run by AI is really the answer for those kind of shops. They are the bridge between a hardworking winemaker and the consumer, is dehumanizing and getting rid of the human touch, the one that we all claim makes all the great wines great really the answer? I don’t think so. Great article nonetheless.
Not suggesting we dehumanise the process, in fact, make it more personal, by removing the overwhelming array of visual choice and yet still give fantastic experience.
It does open up an interesting conversation but there are of course a few gaps into the reasoning. Having said that there are more and more “faceless” “dark” shops operating on delivery platforms which basically nullifies the need to even go to your wine shop. It’s not a fun business to run, but it can be a profitable one, and much simpler to operate.
As a wine salesperson I get many of the points you make, some very pertinent. I keep thinking about the whole process and how to improve a very traditional model that cherishes that tradition.
